Dangerous Driving Don'ts

by SailorMom ()

Another argument for a "Florida" category. On top of the ads for no drinking and driving, and no texting while driving, Florida will need to add PSA's for no bikini waxes while driving With all the beaches, it is a wonder this hasn't happened before?

Breaking News: Giant Birds To Rule to Skies

by SoundAndFury ()
This can only end in missing children, and bad SyFy movies. Actually now that I look these birds up, it looks like they've only pulled DNA from giant, flightless birds. Maybe we're safe after all! For now. I'm waiting on Argentavis Magnificens! If you want to read an extinct bird's genome, you've got to crack a few eggs. That's how DNA has been isolated in a 19,000-year-old emu eggshell – the first time such a feat has been pulled off.

Remember how the State Board of Education in Texas was pushing for a more pro-creationist stance? A whole bunch of them didn't win re-election.

Virginia libraries in peril

Not as perilous a peril as Philly, but it's still sucky. Article in WaPo, that you probably wouldn't be able to read in hard copy in a Fairfax County Public Library.

I'm not trying to pick on Virginia here

by PMMJ ()

"The new wingnut governor of Virginia, Bob McDonnell - a graduate of Pat Robertson's Regent University - has signed an executive order on discrimination in state government hiring that removes the prohibition on discrimination against LGBT people. The order prohibits discrimination on the basis of 'race, sex, color, national origin, religion, age, political affiliation, or against otherwise qualified persons with disabilities.' But it rescinds the order from previous Gov. Tim Kaine that included sexual orientation. So now the state government can once against fire people just for being gay."

Possible HIV cure fallout?

by SoundAndFury ()

This is a two-for-one.

It would appear that scientists have cured a man of HIV (via stem cell transfusion). Currently the procedure kills 1/3 of its recipients, but hey it's a damn impressive start. The article's actually a year old.

Curing HIV sound good? Not so fast (vid).

PA School District Spies on Students

by ammit ()

A Pennsylvania school district issued a laptop to each high school student to take home with them. Awesome! Except the school had the ability to remotely activate the laptops' webcams at any time... and did so. Neither the parents nor the students were notified of or authorized such access. They only found out when an assistant principal told a minor student that she thought he was engaged in inappropriate behavior in his home. You know what's inappropriate behavior? Spying on minor children! Text of the lawsuit.

Seems like all the entertaining news is in badly written newspapers this week. Here's a better overview of this Amy Bishop lady, the professor who went postal on Friday at the University of Alabama. But more sinister, Dr. Bishop reportedly played Dungeons & Dragons and was a bit of an oddball.
